Captain Jerome G. Kiah, keeper of the Pointe Aux Barques Life Saving Station, received a Gold Life Saving Medal for his actions in April of 1880. He later became the District Superintendent for the U.S. Life Saving Service for Lake Huron and Lake Superior, a position he held until 1915. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
