Captain Charles Norton Swan was so popular and well known that the Cape Fear Lighthouse became known as Cap’n Charlie’s Light. Today, the three well preserved keeper’s homes at the site of the former Cape Fear Lighthouse are known as Captain Charlie’s Station and are available as rental properties. Charles Norton Swan is shown here at 85 years old when on May 15, 1958 he threw the switch that lighted for the first time the new 155-tall concrete Oak Island Lighthouse in Caswell Beach, North Carolina. He died on September 27, 1964. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
