Leander White (1844-1915), shown here with his wife Elizabeth, began his lighthouse career as an assistant keeper at Maine’s Boon Island Lighthouse in 1874 and then became head keeper at Whaleback Lighthouse from 1878 to 1886. He then went on to serve as the keeper of Goat Island Lighthouse off the coast of Cape Porpoise Maine, followed by Cape Elizabeth “Two Lights,” and then in 1908 as the keeper of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where his career came to an end when he died at the lighthouse in 1915.
