Walter Nathaniel Fanning, John P. Kofod’s son-in-law, has his son, Walter Norman Fanning, riding in his mailbag at Yerba Buena Lighthouse in 1910. Walter Sr. was a radioman in the Navy and accidentally set the keeper’s house on fire in 1909 from his amateur radio station he set up in the attic. The origin of the fire officially remained a mystery as far as the United States Lighthouse Service hierarchy was concerned. The Yerba Buena naval base’s radio room also served as the island post office, so Walter used to deliver the mail as one of his duties. (Courtesy Fanning Family Collection.)
