A 1729 engraving of the 1716 Boston Lighthouse. In November of 1718, George Worthylake, the first keeper of Boston Lighthouse, along with his wife, Ann, daughter Ruth, and three others, drowned when their small boat capsized as they approached the lighthouse. During the American Revolution, this first tower was destroyed by the British on June 13, 1776. A new light tower was built in 1783. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
