After 38 years of service, Frederick P. Dillon officially retired in 1946. However, he returned on temporary duty during 1947 for several months as a lighthouse engineer on the staff of the Coast and Geodetic Survey to help create a five-year plan to establish and maintain aids to navigation for the Dominican Republic. He also worked on lobbying Congress for a bill to give credit for Lighthouse Service years in pay structures upon consolidation with the Coast Guard, which was eventually passed. In later retirement years, he visited family, enjoyed nature hiking with his wife Miriam (pictured), playing violin, and was active with the Cosmos Club and other retired military and Coast Guard groups in and around Washington, D.C. until he passed away at age 81 in 1965.
