After serving for 28 years in the U.S. Lighthouse Service in many supervisory positions, Frederick Paul Dillon was commissioned as a commander in the United States Coast Guard in 1939. He then was promoted to Captain and finally to Commodore prior to his retirement in 1946. His unpublished 300 page manuscript, The Making of a Lighthouse Engineer,” gives an incredible account of his career years from 1911-1946 and offers an inside perspective of the U.S. Lighthouse Service while sharing many wonderful insights, stories, and events from someone who saw all levels and traveled throughout all locations of the organization.
