Taken as part of their passport photos for their trip to Europe in 1927, Miriam Dillon is surrounded by her four children (L-R) Kathleen, Fred Jr., Merrill and Scott. Frederick and Miriam had agreed that he would never turn down a promotion, but Miriam was “aghast at the prospect of family life” when Frederick Dillon accepted the position of General Superintendent of Lighthouses that required him to visit every district through years of travel. It was felt that it would be better for her and the children to be on an adventure of their own as Frederick began his new post, so the family left for a year in Europe, which caused Frederick to feel “numb at the prospect for them” as he said goodbye aboard the Cunard Luner at the dock in New York.
