In 1920, the Dillon family moved to Puerto Rico where Frederick took the post as the Superintendent of the 9th district.  Of his home, he wrote, “The San Juan Lighthouse Depot where our family lived in the Superintendent’s dwelling was a level, low-lying area of some ten acres and it was the outer portion of La Marina or the old Spanish Naval Station. The dwelling was located back from the beach among a scattering of acacia, palm and aguacate trees and other tropical vegetation.  Behind it were a servant’s dwelling, wash house, chicken house and yard, and a garage for the depot truck. A rubble stone fence separated it from the depot area.” Frederick’s son Merrill is shown on the veranda with the local nanny who was employed to help with the children while Frederick traveled throughout the 2000 mile district during the next seven years, inspecting all light stations and buoys and delivering supplies.
