Prior to becoming a lighthouse keeper at Bear Island Lighthouse in the 1930s, Elmo J. Turner served as a lighthouse keeper at Great Duck Island. Like some of the other keepers in the past, Turner kept a cow at Bear Island Lighthouse for fresh milk and chickens for eggs and fresh meat. With no power on the island, the family kept the cream in the cellar to keep it cool. Following somewhat in their father’s footsteps, Elmo J. Turner’s sons Claude C. Turner and Elmo P. Turner both served on Lighthouse Service buoy tenders. In 1939 when the Coast Guard took over the Lighthouse Service, Elmo P. Turner joined the Coast Guard.
