Following in the footsteps of his father Lewis F. Sawyer, Hebert “Heber” G. Sawyer served at Bear Island Lighthouse from 1905 until he retired in 1925 because of ill health. He joined the Lighthouse Service in 1887 and served at Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse until 1899 when he was transferred to Egg Rock Lighthouse where his father had also previously served as a lighthouse keeper. Herbert G. Sawyer was the first keeper to serve without an assistant keeper at Egg Rock Lighthouse. “Heber” G Sawyer and his wife Iona never had any children, but Iona kept very busy helping to tend the lighthouses where “Heber” served. Herbert “Heber” G. Sawyer died in 1927 and was buried at the Head of the Harbor Cemetery in Tremont, Maine. (Photo Alberta Willey collection, Lighthouse Digest archives.)
