Lighthouse keeper Lewis F. Sawyer is shown here with his wife Vienna, daughter Leah, and son Herbert “Heber” G. Sawyer, who grew up to also become a lighthouse keeper and served at some of the same lighthouses where his father had served before him. Lewis F. Sawyer was the Bear Island Lighthouse keeper from 1899 to 1909, and he had previously been a lighthouse keeper at Egg Rock Lighthouse. Lewis Freeman Sawyer died on September 16, 1919 and is buried in the Head of the Harbor Cemetery in Tremont, Maine. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
