Photo Caption:

Lighthouse keeper Stephen Smallidge lived at Bear Island Lighthouse from 1874 to 1883 with his wife Catherine and their five children. Old letters indicate that Stephen always called his wife by Kate. After being a lighthouse keeper Stephen Smallidge became the Postmaster in Northeast Harbor. In an old book of photos taken by Charlotte E. Pepper, it was written about Stephen and his wife that “They were in all respects fine people and worthy citizens.” Notice the lighthouse and crossed buoy emblem on his hat. This was the earliest logo or emblem used and worn by keepers. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
