Photo Caption:

Lighthouse keeper Joseph Muise, as portrayed by a reenactor at Burnt Island Lighthouse in Maine, perhaps reminiscing about his life as a lighthouse keeper. In 1998 ownership of the island and lighthouse was transferred to the State of Maine, Department of Marine Resources. Then, under the dedicated leadership of Elaine Jones, funding was obtained and the lighthouse was meticulously restored. Today it is a living history museum managed by the nonprofit Keepers of the Burnt Island Light. (Photo by Karen M. Zielinski.)
