Attributed to the famous Prior-Hamblen school in the 1840s-50s, these portraits show Reuben Towle Leavitt II (also called Reuben, Sr.) and either his wife, Nancy, or his mother, Ruth. Reuben served as keeper at Whale’s Back Lighthouse from 1853 - 1859. Ruth, having been previously widowed, lived with him and died there during his last year of service at the age of 89.
