Members of FLA are shown here in June of 2010 at a meeting on Gasparilla Island when the FLA celebrated the listing of the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse (formerly known as the Boca Grande Entrance Rear Range Lighthouse) on the National Register of Historic Places. The FLA members posed in front of the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse to demonstrate support for the Barrier Islands Parks Society’s efforts to acquire and restore the lighthouse. The BIPS has recently signed the licensing agreement with the United States Coast Guard under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, transferring Gasparilla Island Light and its 7.4 acres to their local control. Soon the lighthouse will be fully restored to its former 1927 splendor, and the 7.4 acres of beachfront property that accompanies it will be forever protected from development.
