The Vermilion Lighthouse on Lake Erie was moved to Lake Ontario and became the East Charity Shoal Lighthouse near Cape Vincent, NY, as shown here in 1935. The lighthouse was never a staffed station and was built as an automated lighthouse. It was recently declared excess property and sold at auction by the government. At $25,501 Cyrena Nolan of Dallas, Texas, was the high bidder. This past August when she and her architect wanted to visit the lighthouse they could not find a local resident willing to take them out to the lighthouse. Finally in a rented fishing boat, and then only after several attempts to get close enough, was she able to climb the ladder to the lighthouse. She claims she'll be able to make the lighthouse habitable in a year.
